You may have heard your children coming home and talking about their studies in 'Perthyn' over the last half term. Since September, we have been constructing a new curriculum offering within school which we call 'Perthyn' or 'Belonging'.

Our Perthyn units of work connect learning across the curriculum with nature, helping pupils understand their place within Gresford and their responsibility for its future. By creating meaningful opportunities to step away from screens and to learn outdoors, with and through nature, we encourage curiosity, wellbeing and a deeper connection with our environment. Developed following our educational visits to Iceland and our wider curriculum developments, our Perthyn studies help pupils to connect, engage and belong.

Younger pupils begin by noticing, naming and identifying local plants, trees, wildlife and key features of their surroundings. Through revisiting familiar natural places across the seasons, they investigate how their environment changes over time and what this means for local habitats and wildlife. As their understanding deepens, older pupils become informed stewards, considering the impact of human activity and taking practical action to protect and improve their environment.

Aligned with the Curriculum for Wales, Perthyn connects learning across Humanities, Science and Technology, and Health and Well-being through authentic local experiences. It nurtures curiosity, independent investigation and increasing responsibility, while strengthening wellbeing and a sense of belonging. Rooted in respect, friendship and care, the study helps pupils become ethical, active citizens who understand that belonging means both being part of a place and caring for its future.
